MOVE over Sydney and Melbourne — astonishingly, Canberra has knocked our biggest cities off their perch and been named the best Australian city for travel in 2018, while surging into a list of the top 10 cities in the world.

The ABS released the latest population data figures for the 12-months (March ’16 - March ’17). Population growth is one of many drivers of property prices.

That price growth in Canberra has been steadily accelerating since 2013, but still failed to reach the eight capital city average of 10.2 per cent for June, driven largely by the country's two largest markets, Sydney and Melbourne, which grew by 14.4 per cent and 13.4 per cent respectively.

Given the market in Canberra has been strong of recent times, housing affordability indicators have shown signs of improvement. A good sign, that illustrates household incomes have remained strong and in line with house price increases. This will provide the market with significant fuel to continue its strong growth without any burdens of housing affordability to slow it.
